Assistant Producer
Short form video production role for BBC Sport creating content for the BBC Sport app and website.
Job Introduction
BBC Sport online is the largest online sports site/app in the UK, attracting around 27m global browsers a week. It’s the most popular service of its type with all audiences, covering live sport and sports news across a range of sports, as well as providing great entertainment to sports fans through content such as video and quizzes.
On social media, BBC Sport has 30m followers across Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and TikTok, giving us a massive outlet to reach out to younger audiences to deliver our core news and live coverage, but in a more conversational and, at times, irreverent way.
We want BBC Sport’s output to reflect and understand the audiences we serve – for example, the different geographical regions of the UK and the experience of people from underrepresented groups (e.g. people from Black, Asian or minority ethnic backgrounds, people with lived experience of disability, individuals within the LGBTQ+ community and those from lower socio economic groups). We are therefore actively seeking individuals with skills or experience that can help contribute towards ensuring we maximise the diversity of our coverage and content.
Role Responsibility
BBC Sport has a team which makes video for the BBC Sport app and website, social media accounts such as TikTok and YouTube. These roles are in that team.
This is a vibrant, creative, digital-first team immersed in creating cutting edge content. Every day we produce video for TikTok trends, Instagram Reels, impactful soundless Facebook and Twitter video, immersive mid-form Youtube content and creative material for the country’s biggest sports website. This is a team that is always experimenting with our content and with our tone of voice.
In this team you will also be expected to make video out of BBC Sport’s biggest rights events, such as our cricket coverage of the Ashes (men’s and women’s), World Test Championship and The Hundred, as well as the like of Wimbledon and the World Athletics Championship. This could range from simple clips, to more creative edits to tell stories which get audiences engaged.
This is a good time to mention working hours as it’s not your average 9-5. In this role, the standard work pattern is x 4 10-hour shifts per week. A lot of sport takes place at weekends and in the evenings, so there’s an expectation you’ll be available to work at these times. Not every evening or weekend, of course, but you should be aware the role does often require “non-standard” hours.
Are you the right candidate?
Candidates for this role should have experience of digital and social video production, and also a passion and knowledge to thrive in this ever-changing environment. You’ll need good editorial judgement too and a real interest in a number of different sports.
Experience of video production tools such as Adobe Premiere Pro or equivalents is essential. With additional skills in programs such as After Effects, Photoshop and Animator great to have.
You’ll need to know what types of video work for sports fans and also a social media audience. Why would we post a certain type of video on YouTube but not on Twitter? Which of our TV talent would connect best with our Instagram followers? And how might we entertain the audience on TikTok while still maintaining our high editorial standards?
You may sometimes work on your own or as part of a team. You’ll need to be able to plan really well.
Ultimately we want enthusiasm, ideas, creativity and the visual flair to pull it off.
This is not an entry level role, we’re looking for candidates with experience within the area, please review the criteria for the role before applying.
Please note that you will only be asked to submit a CV by way of application for this vacancy, and this CV will be the sole basis on which we initially review your application. We would therefore encourage you to approach your CV as an application, and to tailor it to highlight the skills and experience which we’ve talked about in this advert. We’d love to know not only about your most relevant experience and responsibilities in previous roles, but also any achievements, transferable skills, or areas of personal or professional interest that highlight why you’d be a great candidate for this role.
